Victoria Martino Awarded SJU Summer Research Scholarship

2010 May 24

Saint Joseph's University recently announced that Victoria Martino of Feasterville Trevose has been chosen to participate in the University's Summer Scholars Program (SSP), which started Monday, May 17, and will last for 10 weeks throughout the summer. Through this program, Martino will work with Catalina Arango, Ph.D. of the Biology department, on a scholarly project, Identification of Genes Involved in Biofilm Formation in Sinorhizobium meliloti.

This year, 90 SJU undergraduates, (as well as students enrolled in five-year B.S./M.S. programs) will engage in hands-on research or other creative projects that foster close professional interaction between students and faculty mentors. Participants receive a $3,200 stipend to support their work, which is conducted largely independently, but meet regularly with faculty to discuss progress.

The original funding for the SSP, which began in 1994, was received from a grant awarded to the Department of Biology from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The program has since gone University-wide. Students apply for the program from departments that span the broad spectrum of studies offered by the University.
