Local Student, Rich Viebrock, Win Business Ethics Competition

2015 May 26

The Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics at Saint Joseph's University recently announced the winners of its 2015 undergraduate student paper competition in business ethics.

Local resident and SJU senior, Rich Viebrock , of Philadelphia, PA (19128), received second place in the competition for a submission titled "A Rights Based, Ethical Scrutiny of the International Coffee Industry". Viebrock, an internantional business major, received a $750 prize.

"The competition is intended to inspire students to apply ethical principles to a business case or issue," says David Steingard, Ph.D, Associate Director of the Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics and Associate Professor of Leadership, Ethics and Organizational Sustainability. "The winning papers exemplify the students deep understanding of both the academic theories they've learned in the classroom and the principles of ethical decision-making infused in the curriculum."

In order to be considered for one of the top prizes, the papers had to integrate ethics into a business case and recommend a course of action to resolve the case as ethically superior to other available alternatives.

The mission of the Arrupe Center is to assure that students are equipped to engage in careful, sustained, and critical reflection on ethical issues and are prepared to use that reflection in their business decision making.
