Jimson Mathew Inducted into Phi Beta Kappa

2015 May 7

Saint Joseph's University junior Jimson Mathew of Philadelphia, PA (19131) will be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa on Thursday, May 14 at 5 p.m. Phi Beta Kappa (PBK) is America's oldest and most prestigious academic honor society for the liberal arts. Induction into the 239-year-old honor society is one of the most prestigious honors an undergraduate in the College of Arts and Sciences can achieve. The ceremony will be held in the President's Lounge of the Campion Student Center on SJU's campus.

Mathew is studying Computer Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at Saint Joseph's.

"SJU's liberal arts education allows students to enroll in a wide variety of classes in multiple disciplines to have a complete educational experience," says Brian Forster, Ph.D., vice president of Saint Joseph's University PBK Chapter and Lab Coordinator, General Education Program - Natural Sciences. "This, I believe, will make students more qualified to meet the challenges of today's demanding and changing world."

"PBK is a nationally recognized honor society, known for having members who are successful in their fields and for advocating the importance of having a liberal arts education," he adds.

First instituted at Saint Joseph's in 2001, PBK honors academic excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Students selected for admission must meet the national requirement of 90 liberal arts credits and be recognized for impressive academic accomplishments by SJU faculty members. Typically, students elected to PBK have a GPA of at least 3.5, but students are generally not selected on the strength of GPA alone. This year's inductees include many students who are carrying two majors or a major/minor combination in completely different fields.
